Time Travellers
was part of my show a Glimpse of Art and the Imagination at the Pie Factory Margate 2016.
I visited my stepmother Elizabeth Marks in December 2015. Elizabeth gave me an early photo album belonging to my father Reg Marks. I had never seen photos of him before the war.
There were photos showing Reg as part of the Hats Off Review playing in Margate in 1937. I was about to show at the Pie Factory Margate for the first time.
This serendipity was an accidental beginning to working with space and installations.
My mother Bina Korngold Marks had the Japanese figures that my father had brought back from Japan over 65 years ago. She gave them to me. I have a memory of them, their vibrancy of colours, the material intact and their hair lush. So much of time had changed this.
I collaborated with textile artist Shelley Beach Ganderton to recreate the intensity of the colours to drape over the images of the dolls and the photo of Reg on Margate beach with the Hats Off Review.
